Introducing PM Insights Blog: A Journey in Project Management

Updated: Sep 22, 2024

Welcome to the PM Insights inaugural blog! I am so glad you are here!

About Me…

My name is Natalie, and I have been managing projects in some capacity for over 20 years. I am both PMP and ACP certified   Like many of you, I did not start my career to become a project manager. In the early days, project management was less of a career choice and more of additional duties that fell into other, more well-defined job descriptions. However, as the world became more complex, project management became increasingly important to organizations, becoming a critical component and strategic necessity to ensure ROI and business growth.

As I’ve watched the project management industry expand, I have experienced firsthand the successes and challenges of managing large (and small) efforts across multiple sectors. In 2016, I left my corporate job and started independent consulting under Insight Project Management. As a consultant, I have been fortunate enough to work in a wide range of industries, including finance, information technology, construction, and manufact ring. This experience has also allowed me to experience a multitude of approaches and PMOs at varying maturity levels.

About the PM Insights Blog & InspiringPM.com platform…

This platform will continually embark on a comprehensive exploration of project management, yet (and one thing I love about project management) the field is so vast that that many topics transcend the realm of project management, adding value to various professionals, not just project managers. By using my unique insight, I want to offer practical solutions and learning opportunities and explore some of my favorite aspects of project management, leadership, communication,  and problem-solving, encouraging and facilitating personal and professional growth. Whether you're a seasoned project manager looking to refine your skills or someone entirely new to the field, I hope to share my journey, experience, and desire to learn & grow to empower you and instill confidence (if I can successfully run projects, so can YOU), and foster a sense of capability in tackling projects or goal of any scale.

I created this platform because I genuinely love being a project manager. I live by the PMI values of responsibility, respect, fairness, and honesty, and I am committing myself to sharing my voice to lift  others. I see terrific opportunities and potential in the world of project management that I want to engage, share, and learn with others, creating inspirational and supportive content for growth mindset individuals. It is time to stretch myself and start sharing my experiences, both accomplishments and occasional failures, and help others. I am a project management advocate, inspiring PM’s by:

  • Providing engaging and relevant content; helping others learn by sharing ideas, pitfalls, and creative problem-solving.

  • Encourage current and aspiring project managers to evolve, grow, and improve myself while I'm at it.

  • Empower others to be confident leaders and better communicators, capable of overcoming obstacles and successfully managing people and projects.

Project management is a diverse and dynamic career choice, and I want to be a positive presence in the project management community. I want to give back to the industry that has had such a significant impact on my life in countless ways, both personally and professionally. Here is a glimpse of the type of content and topics the PM Insights Blog will cover.

Let’s dive in.

As I sit down to write my first blog, I’m trying to find the words to explain why I see project management as such an intriguing career path. Dr. Harold Kerzner’s book, “Project Management: A Systems Approach to Planning, Scheduling, and Controlling,” declared project management as both an art and a science.   It involves applying established methodologies and using various tools and techniques (all within the appropriate doses). It also requires soft skills and a nuanced understanding of human dynamics, communication, adaptability. Due to the nature of project management, it is highly versatile and can be applicable across any industry that interests you.

I appreciate the versatility of project management and the life skills it has helped me develop. As previously mentioned, I have worked in a variety of industries. Project management has something for everyone; it crosses many sectors that can cater to your interests. If you enjoy Legos and building, you can manage construction projects. If you are technically savvy, IT may be the industry for you, which has a variety of choices, from video game and product development to systems engineering and cyber security—Are you interested in  raveling to Mars? Yep, NASA needs project managers, too.

The skills you gain from becoming a project manager translate to almost any industry because the foundation remains the same. Project management boils down to these five domains:

  1. Organized

  2. Creative

  3. Leadership

  4. Communication

  5. The Right Mindset

If you are willing to master these skills, project management might be your career. It can be gratifying and fulfilling work.
