insightpmops

It's a common misconception that introversion is a sign of weakness and a barrier to leadership. Another widespread misunderstanding is that introverts are natural followers, whereas extroverts are born leaders. Because of these stories, introverts perceive themselves as inferior, do not consider themselves leaders, and do not seek out leadership roles. However, this myth needs to be debunked because introverts have unique skills and qualities that make them outstanding leaders. Do you still feel confused about how an introvert can lead a team? Here are a few tips on how to lead a team when you are naturally an introvert.

People often believe that a leader needs to be an outstanding networker, talkative, and vocal thinker—qualities typically associated with extroverts. That is untrue, though, as good leaders can be introverted and extroverted. Even if introverts are not confident, outspoken, or expressive with their thoughts, they possess qualities that enable them to lead others and make critical judgments. Additionally, several studies have shown that introverts make excellent leaders. According to a Harvard Business Review study, introverted leaders are better at leading proactive employees because they actively listen to their ideas and let them take the initiative.

This is an affirmation for all the introverts who feel they are not suitable for management or leadership roles. If you are new to this role or hoping to apply for leadership positions, here are some tips on how to lead a team when you are naturally an introvert.

Recognize and Embrace Introversion as a Strength

Embracing your introversion as a strength rather than a weakness is the first step toward developing efficient leadership skills. Recognize your unique traits and how they can be beneficial in your leadership role. Introverts are good at making thoughtful decisions, analyzing, observing, and strategic planning, and these qualities are valuable when you are leading a team. So the tip is to recognize these strengths and make the best use of them when leading a team.

Communicate Effectively

Although introverts dread to communicate, when they do it's valuable and well-articulated because they consider their responses carefully. When managing a team, this trait may be beneficial. It is easier for introverts to communicate in writing or one-on-one than to speak in front of a larger audience. To utilize the quality of valuable communication, you can practice, prepare, and plan before you have to speak to a larger audience or team to boost your confidence and make your communication more impactful.

Leverage the Power of Listening

Introverts are known as the best listeners. Even though speaking is commonly considered the most effective way to communicate, listening is just as important. Introverts can use this strength to their fullest when leading a team. Active listening and creating a peaceful environment will empower your proactive team members—even introverts—to freely express their opinions without worrying about being judged. Your leadership role will ultimately get easier since the team members will trust you, believe in you, and follow the instructions you give.

Step Out of Your Comfort Zone

Although it's not necessary to completely change your introverted personality when leading a team, there can be times when you need to push yourself beyond your comfort zone. Although introverts may be reluctant to speak in front of a big group of people in public speaking settings, they may have to represent their team or organization numerous times as leaders. However, with practice, you might be able to get past this challenge and represent your company on larger platforms. Being a leader may also require you to make bold decisions or take risks, which can also be challenging as an introvert due to the fear of criticism or failure. But instead of giving up on opportunities, it is better to step out of your comfort zone, overcome fears, and learn new skills.

Take Breaks to Recharge Your Energy

When it comes to managing socializing, constant interactions, deadlines, and expectations, introverts may experience burnout or stress. They could feel exhausted from handling all the responsibilities, and their social energy might also run out. It is preferable to take brief breaks from work to maintain well-being and efficient work performance. Prioritizing self-care will help you maintain a balance between your workload and your general well-being. It can be as simple as taking a few minutes to sit in a quiet spot, practice meditation, or do anything else that will give you the energy you need to resume the work.

Create an Inclusive and Proactive Environment

Introverts appear to be more effective at leading proactive employees. Thus, as a team leader, you can leverage this strength to create an inclusive and open environment where team members feel free to contribute their insightful ideas. This will make it easier for you to work with team members from various departments who have varied personalities and give valuable insights based on their areas of expertise. Additionally, it will help you earn their respect, gain their trust, and create a proactive work environment where they can apply their knowledge and experience to the projects.

Seek Feedback

Despite following a ton of advice, you could still make mistakes or have doubts about your ability to lead a team. Feedback in these situations may help in your growth. Individualized feedback sessions are a great way to get input from your team members and share your thoughts regarding how they performed. It will help you develop in both terms, whether emotionally and professionally, give you more self-assurance, and redefine your leadership abilities.

Conclusion

Given the stereotypes about introverts in society, leading a team when you are an introvert may seem like an overwhelming job. However, introverts may effectively lead the team and set new standards for quiet leadership by utilizing their inherent skills, which include intelligent conversation, active listening, and strategic thinking. The key to success is to accept your introversion and apply basic leadership techniques to effectively manage a team and debunk a myth that says introverts aren't good team leaders.
